How Total Carbon Footprint Is Calculated

Total CO₂e = (Elec × 12 × ElecFac) + (Veh × VehFac) + (Air × AirFac) + (Waste × 52 × WasteFac)

Where:

  • Elec = Monthly electricity consumption (kWh/month)
  • ElecFac = Electricity emission factor (kg CO₂e/kWh)
  • Veh = Annual vehicle distance traveled (km/year)
  • VehFac = Vehicle emission factor (kg CO₂e/km)
  • Air = Annual air travel distance (km/year)
  • AirFac = Air travel emission factor (kg CO₂e/km)
  • Waste = Weekly waste generated (kg/week)
  • WasteFac = Waste emission factor (kg CO₂e/kg)

We first turn monthly and weekly numbers into yearly figures. We multiply electricity use by 12 for the whole year. We multiply weekly waste by 52 weeks. Then, we multiply these amounts by their specific emission factors. These factors tell us how much pollution each unit creates. Finally, we add all these parts together to get the total emissions.
