What Is Total Sea Time

Total Sea Time is the full number of days a seafarer works on a vessel. It counts every day from the start date to the end date of a contract. This number is often used to show work experience for job applications or license renewals.

How Total Sea Time Is Calculated

Formula

Total Sea Time (days) = (Sign-off date − Sign-on date) + 1

Where:

  • Sign-off date = The last day of service
  • Sign-on date = The first day of service

To find the total days, you subtract the start date from the end date. This gives you the difference in days. You then add 1 day to include both the first day and the last day in your count. This ensures every calendar day of service is counted.

Why Total Sea Time Matters

Tracking your sea time is key to building a maritime career. It shows how much experience you have for getting better jobs. It also helps you meet the rules needed to renew your certificates.

Why Accurate Records Are Important for Seafarers

If you do not track your time correctly, you might not meet the requirements for your next license rank. This can delay your career progress and legal standing. Keeping a clear log helps you prove your skills and stay ready for new opportunities.

Sea Time vs. Leave Time

Sea time only counts the days you are working on the ship. It does not count the days you are at home on leave between contracts. Knowing this difference helps you plan your contracts to meet specific work goals.
