This score uses information about the patient's age, blood pressure, and other medical problems. It also uses results from a camera test called an endoscopy to look at the stomach. A higher score suggests a greater risk that the patient might not survive.

How Rockall Score Is Calculated

Total Rockall Score = Age + Shock + Comorbidity + Diagnosis + Stigmata

Where:

  • Age = Points based on patient age (0, 1, or 2)
  • Shock = Points based on blood pressure and pulse (0, 1, or 2)
  • Comorbidity = Points for other serious diseases (0, 2, or 3)
  • Diagnosis = Points based on the finding during endoscopy (0, 1, or 2)
  • Stigmata = Points for signs of recent bleeding (0 or 2)

To find the total score, you add up points from five different areas. You get points for being older, having low blood pressure, having other major sicknesses, having a serious diagnosis like cancer, or having active bleeding seen during the test. The points are added together to get a final number between 0 and 11. This final number helps place the patient into a risk category.
