What Is Ideal Body Weight

Ideal Body Weight, or IBW, is a number that gives a general idea of a healthy weight for a person based on their height and sex. Doctors and health workers use it as a starting point when planning treatments, diets, or medicine doses. It does not measure fat or muscle. It is just a simple guide based on averages from large groups of people.

How Ideal Body Weight Is Calculated

Formula

Males: IBW (kg) = 50 + 2.3 x (Height in inches - 60)
Females: IBW (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 x (Height in inches - 60)

Where:

  • IBW = Ideal Body Weight in kilograms
  • Height in inches = your height converted to inches (divide cm by 2.54)
  • 60 = 5 feet in inches, which is the starting point
  • 2.3 = kilos added for each extra inch above 5 feet
  • 50 = base weight for males in kilograms
  • 45.5 = base weight for females in kilograms

This formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet tall. For males, that base is 50 kg. For females, it is 45.5 kg. For every inch taller than 5 feet, it adds 2.3 kg to the total. So a person who is 5 feet 5 inches tall would add 5 times 2.3 kg to their base weight. The result is an estimate of a weight that may be healthy for that height and sex.

Why Ideal Body Weight Matters

Knowing your ideal body weight may help you set reasonable health goals. It gives you a simple number to think about when you talk to a doctor or plan your diet. While it is not a perfect measure, it provides a useful starting point for thinking about your overall health.

Why Ideal Body Weight Is Important for General Health

Weighing much more or much less than the estimated ideal range may be linked to a higher chance of some health problems. Very high weight may be linked to issues like joint pain, high blood pressure, or trouble sleeping. Very low weight may be linked to weakness, poor immunity, or nutrient gaps. Checking your IBW is a simple first step, but it does not replace a proper health check-up.

For Males and Females

The formula gives different results for males and females because males tend to have more muscle and bone mass on average. A male and female of the same height will get different ideal weight numbers. This is normal and does not mean one is better than the other. It simply reflects general body structure differences between sexes.

For Athletes and Highly Active People

The Devine Formula may not work well for people who have a lot of muscle, such as athletes or bodybuilders. Muscle weighs more than fat for the same size. So a muscular person may weigh much more than their IBW and still be very healthy. If you are very active or lift weights, you may want to look at body fat percentage instead of just weight.

Ideal Body Weight vs Body Mass Index

People often confuse IBW with BMI, but they are different. BMI uses both your weight and height to give a single score. IBW gives you a target weight based only on height and sex. BMI tells you if your current weight falls in a certain range. IBW tells you what weight may be ideal for your height. Both are estimates and neither measures body fat directly.
