SGPA Calculator

The SGPA Calculator estimates your Semester Grade Point Average. Simply enter the number of courses, then add credits and grade points for each course to calculate your SGPA, total credits, and total weighted grade points. SGPA represents the weighted average performance of a student across all courses completed in a semester. This calculator also calculates total credits and total weighted grade points.

What Is Semester Grade Point Average

Semester Grade Point Average, or SGPA, is a number that shows how well you did in all your courses during one semester. It looks at each course you took and gives more weight to courses with more credits. A course worth 4 credits counts more than a course worth 2 credits. Your SGPA is usually a number between 0 and 10 in Indian universities. A higher SGPA means you did better in that semester.

How Semester Grade Point Average Is Calculated

Formula

SGPA = Sum of (Credit x Grade Point) for all courses / Sum of all Credits

Where:

  • SGPA = Semester Grade Point Average
  • Credit = Credit value assigned to a course
  • Grade Point = Numerical grade point earned in that course
  • Sum of (Credit x Grade Point) = Total weighted grade points for all courses
  • Sum of all Credits = Total credits registered in the semester

To find your SGPA, you first multiply the credits of each course by the grade point you earned in that course. This gives you the weighted grade points for each course. Then you add up all those weighted grade points. After that, you add up all your credits. Finally, you divide the total weighted grade points by the total credits. This way, courses with more credits have a bigger effect on your final SGPA.

Why Semester Grade Point Average Matters

Knowing your SGPA helps you see how you are doing in your current semester. It is a key number that colleges and employers may look at when judging your academic record.

Why Understanding SGPA Is Important for Academic Planning

If you do not track your SGPA, you may not know if you are falling behind. A low SGPA in one semester can pull down your overall CGPA, which may affect your chances for higher studies, campus placements, or scholarships. Checking your SGPA after each semester helps you spot weak areas early and plan to improve in the next semester.

For Tracking Semester Performance

Your SGPA for each semester shows you a clear picture of that term's work. You may compare your SGPA across semesters to see if your performance is going up or down. This helps you decide if your study methods are working or if you may need to change how you prepare for exams.

For Planning Cumulative GPA

Your CGPA is built from all your semester SGPAs. If you know your current SGPA, you can estimate what CGPA you may reach by the end of your course. This is helpful when setting targets for future semesters or checking if you meet the minimum CGPA needed for admission to postgraduate programs.

SGPA vs CGPA

SGPA is the average for one semester only, while CGPA is the average across all semesters so far. A common mistake is to treat SGPA as your overall grade. For example, a student may have a high SGPA in one semester but a lower CGPA because of poor performance in earlier semesters. Use SGPA to check each semester and CGPA to see your full academic record.
