What Is Cumulative Grade Point Average

Cumulative Grade Point Average, or CGPA, is the average grade point you earn across all your semesters in college. It gives one single number that shows how well you have done in your entire course so far. In India, CGPA is usually measured on a scale of 0 to 10. A higher CGPA may help with getting jobs, going for higher studies, or qualifying for scholarships.

How Cumulative Grade Point Average Is Calculated

Formula

CGPA = (SGPA1 x Credits1 + SGPA2 x Credits2 + ... + SGPAi x Creditsi) / (Credits1 + Credits2 + ... + Creditsi)

Where:

  • CGPA = cumulative grade point average across all semesters (grade points)
  • SGPAi = semester grade point average for semester i (grade points)
  • Creditsi = total credits earned in semester i (credits)

To find your CGPA, you first multiply each semester's SGPA by the number of credits you took that semester. This gives you the weighted grade points for that semester. Then you add up all the weighted grade points and divide by the total number of credits across all semesters. This way, semesters with more credits have a bigger effect on your final CGPA than semesters with fewer credits.

Why Cumulative Grade Point Average Matters

Knowing your CGPA helps you see where you stand in your academic journey. It is often the first number that employers and colleges look at when reviewing your profile.

Why Tracking Your CGPA Is Important for Academic Planning

If you do not track your CGPA, you may not realize that one weak semester with high credits can pull your average down a lot. By knowing your CGPA early, you may plan which semesters to focus on more. This can help you avoid falling below the minimum CGPA needed to stay in your program or graduate on time.

For Higher Studies Admissions

Many universities in India and abroad ask for your CGPA when you apply for postgraduate courses. A strong CGPA may improve your chances of getting selected. Some colleges have a minimum CGPA cutoff, so it helps to know your number before you apply.

For Campus Placements and Jobs

Most companies that visit college campuses for hiring set a minimum CGPA to shortlist students. If your CGPA is below that level, you may not get a chance to sit for the interview. Keeping track of your CGPA each semester helps you know if you need to improve before placement season begins.

CGPA vs SGPA

SGPA is your grade point average for just one semester. CGPA is the average across all semesters so far. A common mistake is to think that adding up all SGPAs and dividing by the number of semesters gives the CGPA. That only works if every semester has the same number of credits. When credits vary, you must use the weighted formula to get the correct CGPA.
