What Is Required Marks
Required marks is the lowest score you must get in your remaining tests or assignments to reach the final grade you want. It looks at what you have already scored, how much of the course is done, and how much is still left. This number tells you how hard you need to work in the part of the course that is still ahead of you. It is a simple way to plan your study time and set a clear goal for your next exam.
How Required Marks Is Calculated
Formula
Required Marks (%) = (Target % - (Current % x Completed Weight / 100)) / (Remaining Weight / 100)
Where:
- Target % = The final overall percentage you want to achieve
- Current % = Your average score in the work completed so far
- Completed Weight = The total weight of all finished assessments (%)
- Remaining Weight = The total weight of all pending assessments (%)
The formula works in three steps. First, it finds out how many percentage points you have already earned toward your final grade by multiplying your current score with the weight of completed work. Then it subtracts that from your target to find out how many more points you still need. Finally, it divides that remaining need by the weight of the assessments left, which gives you the exact percentage you must score in those remaining assessments to reach your goal.
Why Required Marks Matters
Knowing your required marks helps you study in a smart way. Instead of guessing how much effort is enough, you get a clear number to aim for. This may help you use your time well and focus on what is needed most.
Why Knowing Your Required Score Is Important for Exam Planning
If you do not know how many marks you need, you may study too little and fall short of your goal. You may also study too much on one topic and not enough on another. Knowing the exact number gives you a realistic target. Without it, you might think you are doing well when you are actually behind, or you might feel stressed thinking the task is harder than it really is.
For Maintaining a Passing Grade
If your goal is to simply pass the course, this calculator may help you find the minimum score needed in your remaining work. For example, if you already have 40% with half the course done, you may only need a small score in the rest to reach the passing mark of 40% overall. This helps you avoid overworking when a lower effort may be enough.
For Achieving a First Class or Distinction
If you are aiming for a high grade like first class or distinction, the required marks may be much higher than your current average. For instance, going from 75% to 85% overall with only 30% of the course left may require a very high score in the final exam. This helps you understand how challenging that goal is and whether it may be realistic given your preparation time.
Required Marks vs Current Percentage
Students often confuse their current percentage with the marks they need in the next exam. Your current percentage is the average of work already done. Required marks is what you need to score in the work that is still left. These two numbers are usually different. For example, having 75% now does not mean you need 75% in the final. You may need much more or much less depending on the weight of the remaining assessment.
