What Is CDS Written Examination Marks
The CDS Written Examination Marks represent the total score a candidate achieves in the written test for the Combined Defence Services. This score is the sum of marks obtained in specific papers like English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics. It serves as the primary academic screening metric before the interview stage.
How CDS Written Examination Marks Is Calculated

Total Marks = English + GK + Math (if applicable)
Where:
- English = Marks obtained in English paper (Max 100)
- GK = Marks obtained in General Knowledge paper (Max 100)
- Math = Marks obtained in Elementary Mathematics (Max 100)
To find the total, add the marks from English and General Knowledge together. If you are applying for the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), or Air Force Academy (AFA), you must also add your Mathematics marks. For the Officers Training Academy (OTA), only English and General Knowledge marks are added.

Candidates for these academies must prepare for three papers. Since Mathematics is included, the maximum possible marks are higher (300). A strong performance in Mathematics is often recommended to boost the overall percentage.
For OTA Applicants
OTA applicants only take two papers, so the maximum marks are 200. Since there are fewer papers, scoring well in both English and General Knowledge is critical to achieving a competitive percentage.
