How Excavation Volume Is Calculated

Formula

Rectangular: Volume = Length × Width × Depth
Circular: Volume = π × (Diameter / 2)² × Depth
Trench: Volume = Length × Depth × (Top Width + Bottom Width) / 2

Where:

  • Length, Width, Depth = Dimensions of the hole in meters
  • Diameter = Width of the circular hole in meters
  • Top/Bottom Width = Widths at the opening and floor of the trench
  • π (Pi) ≈ 3.1416

To find the volume, you multiply the area of the shape by how deep it is. For a rectangle, you multiply the three sides together. For a circle, you find the area of the circle and multiply it by the depth. For a trench, you find the average width and multiply that by the length and depth.
